Dr Jaime Orfila Timoner

Doctor Jaime Orfila Timoner is a renowned internist based in the Balearic Islands, Spain. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery, specializing in Internal Medicine. He holds a master's degree in Bodily Injury Assessment and Health Administration, and has over 30 years of experience practicing medicine. He has dedicated a significant part of his career to scientific research and dissemination. In this regard, he has been a scientific advisor to a health-focused newspaper for two decades, and regularly appears on radio and television programs to discuss his medical field, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

He has participated in numerous studies, including one promoted by the CSIC and the University Hospital of Son Espases. In this study, the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA was measured daily in the hospital, a reference centre in Mallorca, using an air filtration system in the rooms, corridors, and terraces of the facility. The study results revealed that more genetic material was detected in the interior common areas of hospitals, as the rest of the areas have effective ventilation systems. This study helped to better prevent infections among medical and healthcare personnel in hospital centres through new preventive measures.

Currently, Dr Jaime Orfila is the clinical head of the Internal Medicine Service at the University Hospital of Son Espases in Palma de Mallorca, and also practices private medicine as an Internal Medicine and Medical Expert in a private practice.

In addition, Dr Orfila Timoner has served as vice-president of the Official College of Physicians of the Balearic Islands, director general of Evaluation and Accreditation of the Ministry of Health of the Balearic Government, member of the Board of Directors of the Carlos III Health Institute, the Scientific-Technical Committee of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System, and of the Technical Commission of Human Resources of the Ministry of Health. 

He now combines his public and private healthcare work with teaching and research. He is a member of the Autonomous Committee on Clinical Research Ethics and an associate professor of Medicine at the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain.
