Assessment of cardiovascular and sport medicine profile of Italian Olympic Athletes

Dr Giuseppe di Gioia

Dr Giuseppe Di Gioia is a full-time Cardiologist specialized in Sport Cardiology. Since 2016, he has been working with National and International Olympic Athletes at the National Italian Olympic Committee (Institute of Sport Medicine and Science of CONI, Rome). He is involved in evaluating athletes before the Olympic Games and other international events and managing their cardiovascular health. Additionally, he works at the University Hospital Fondazione Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, a renowned cardiovascular reference hospital. His expertise lies in Echocardiography and both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic cardiological evaluations.

Dr Di Gioia began his medical training in 2004 at the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, where he graduated with top honours in July 2010. He later specialized in Cardiovascular Disease at the same university, again graduating with top honours in July 2016. He has been practicing at the University Hospital of Campus Bio-Medico of Rome since 2016, treating various cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, and cardiomyopathy. He also has expertise in vascular diseases such as lower limb and carotid artery disease. 

Dr Di Gioia is currently actively involved in cardiovascular research related to high-level athletes. He works closely with the Italian Medical Olympic Team and conducts studies on topics such as athlete's heart adaptations to training, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmic disease, lipid disorders, and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. He has authored over 30 scientific publications in the field of Cardiology and Sport Cardiology, which have been published in esteemed international journals such as Circulation, American Journal of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, and International Journal of Cardiology. He is also a speaker at major international congresses. 

Furthermore, Dr Di Gioia has obtained several national and international certifications in Cardiological and Vascular Ecography. Notably, he holds certifications in Trans-esophageal Echocardiography and Trans-Thoracic Echocardiography issued by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (E.A.C.V.I.) and the European Society of Cardiology (E.S.C.). He also holds a certification in Trans-Esophageal, Trans-Thoracic, and Vascular Echocardiography from the Italian Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound (S.I.E.C.).
